Interview:
Me: What's your favorite type of music?
Mom: I would say my favorite types of music are Pop and Reggaeton.
Me: Why do you like Pop and Reggaeton music?
Mom: I feel like they are both really energizing forms of music.
Me: Who are your favorite artists from those genres of music?
Mom: I really like The Black Eyed Peas and Pitbull.
Me: Do you have a favorite song from these genres? Why?
Mom: I would say "Party of a Lifetime" which is by Pitbull, and I also like "Hit It" by the Black Eyed Peas.
Me: Do you have a song that has a special meaning to you? What is it?
Mom: No, I don't really have a song that has a special meaning.
Me: What kind of music did you listen to when you were younger?
Mom: I was really into Oldies. Like old time 60's and 70's music.
Me: How did you listen to music (as far as technology: cassette players, CD players, MP3, etc) as a kid?
Mom: I used cassette tapes. I had a Walkman that I would listen to music with. I was also alive when compact discs came out, so I used those too. Those are CD's by the way.
Me: How have your musical tastes changed over the course of your life?
Mom: Well, I enjoy most of the new music you kids are listening to, but I still like the old music even though I don't listen to it as much.
Me: Did you play any instruments when you were younger"
Mom: Yes. the clarinet.
Me: What did you enjoy about making music?
Mom: It's just cool to be able to do it.
Me: Ok, Do you have a least favorite type of music and why?
Mom: The Blues, Jazz, and Polka music. I just really don't like those.
Me: What's your least favorite song?
Mom: That song called "Super Freaky Girl". I hate it because they trick you, it's like a rick roll song. It sounds like it's going to start off as like, an old timey song, and then it's not.
Me: How has music impacted you through your life? What do you use music for? For example, general enjoyment, stress relief, help with work, etc.
Mom: I guess just to help me clean.
Me: Did your parents have an opinion on your music? Did they like it or disagree with it?
Mom: They disagreed with the music I wanted to listen to. They were stuck back in their time and didn't really grow with the new music. As music changed, I followed it and they didn't like that. I would try to listen to the new music, and my mom would be like "No, we're going to listen to this old music."
Me: Have you been to any concerts? Who was it? Did you enjoy them?
Mom: I've been to 4 concerts. I saw Beach Boys, Boys 2 Men, Madonna, and Pitbull. I enjoyed them, they were fun. They weren't too crazy.
Me: Are there any concerts you want to go to in the future?
Mom: Not really, my concert days are over unfortunately.
Me: What do you think of today's popular music?
Mom: It's ok. I'll still listen to it but it's not my favorite.
Me: Ok, lastly what does music mean to you? Is it a form of expression, just for listening, both, or neither?
Mom: I think it is definitely a form of expression. It really is a very expressional art. Many people use music to express themselves, usually their feelings and whatnot.
Here are the songs my mom mentioned that she liked in the interview, as well as the one she doesn't like so much:
